When can I apply to have my green card renewed?
You can file to have your green card replaced 180 days prior to the expiration date.

Where is my expiration date located on my green card?
The expiration date is commonly located on front of the green card.

How do I obtain an application Form I-90 to renew my green card?

  • You can file the application electronically.
  • You can obtain application in paper form.
What happens if my green card has expired?
If you fail to renew your green card before the expiration date, In reference to Section 264 of the Immigration and Nationality Act states that: "Every alien, eighteen years of age and over, shall at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card issued to him. Any alien who fails to comply with these provisions shall be guilty of a misdemeanor." It is recommended to apply for the green card renewal as soon as possible with application form I-90.

What if my green card has no expiration date?
There is proposed immigration legislation that all green cards must have expiration dates. This is currently not mandatory; however you may be advised when entering/returning to the United States to have your green card renewed by CBP (Customs Border Protection).

How long is my green card renewed for?
Your green card is valid for 10 years.

What if my green card was destroyed or lost?
You must fill out the green card renewal application form I-90.

How long will the green card renewal process take?
The time for processing green card renewal varies it can range from 6 to 12 months.

What do I use for evidence of my permanent resident status while waiting for my new Green Card?
You will receive temporary documentation for your permanent resident status while in the green card renewal process. This temporary proof of your status will be valid for one year.

What if I become married and would like to change to my new name on my Green Card.
You will be required to fill out the green card renewal form I-90. The completed application should be submitted with the supporting documents, such as a marriage certificate.

How long can I stay outside the United States with a Green Card?
Green Card holders can travel outside the U.S. Generally, there are limitations on how long a Green Card holder can stay outside the U.S. For extended travel outside the U.S. a Reentry Permit (Travel Document) may be required.

If I am still not a Lawful Permanent Resident. How can I apply for a Green Card?
There are several ways to apply for a Green Card, including:
  • Getting married to a U.S. citizen
  • Sponsored by a Family Member(such as a parent, brother or sister)
  • Sponsored by a U.S.- based company
  • Starting a business or investing on a U.S. based company (Green Card Investment)
  • Green Card Lottery (Diversity Immigrant Visa Program)
